Apple has lodged an appeal against a €500 million ($580 million) fine imposed by the European Commission for alleged violations of the bloc’s Digital Markets Act (DMA). The penalty, announced in April, accused Apple of restricting developers from directing users to make purchases outside the App Store.
Under the DMA, large tech platforms must allow developers to use alternative payment systems. The European Commission argued that Apple’s rules failed to meet these requirements.
In late June, Apple introduced a revised fee structure in the EU, adding a mix of acquisition fees, store service charges, and a core technology commission to cover alternative payment options. The changes appeared aimed at addressing regulatory concerns.
In a statement to TechCrunch, Apple criticized the decision, saying the fine “goes far beyond what the law requires” and warning that the mandated business terms could harm both developers and users.
