Bitchat, the latest project from Twitter and Block founder Jack Dorsey, has launched on the iOS App Store. According to Dorsey, the app’s initial codebase was written over a weekend in early July, demonstrating his hands-on approach to the product’s creation.
Operating on Bluetooth mesh technology, Bitchat enables messaging between users within Bluetooth range — typically about 100 meters — without requiring cellular or Wi-Fi connections. This makes it particularly useful in situations where traditional connectivity is unavailable, such as at large events or in rural areas.
The user interface is deliberately simple, bypassing account creation in favor of instant access to a chat screen. Here, users can view local conversations and set a customizable display name, which can be changed at will.
Although Dorsey has not formally commented on fake Bitchat listings on Google Play, he shared another user’s post warning that the app is not yet on Android and urging caution.
